Position: Director of Music & Organist

All Hallows Parish – Edgewater & Davidsonville, Maryland

All Hallows Parish, an historic Episcopal community worshipping in two locations, seeks a Director of Music & Organist to lead its music ministry with excellence, spiritual sensitivity, and collaborative leadership. All Hallows is located in the vibrant greater Annapolis area, close to both Washington DC and Baltimore MD, in an idyllic small community setting.

The successful candidate will ensure that music supports the liturgical life of the church, enriches congregational participation, and reflects the parish’s commitment to a hybrid musical identity that integrates traditional and contemporary expressions.

Primary Qualifications

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn Episcopal liturgy, including its structure, theology, and musical implications.
  • Ability to select a wide variety of music that supports the liturgical calendar and enhances worship.

Skills

  • Demonstrated success as an organist and pianist, with the ability to choose and play music in a way that encourages and invites strong congregational participation.
  • Demonstrated success as a conductor, capable of making a variety of musical groups exciting, accessible, and spiritually meaningful. This includes teaching music effectively and training volunteer musicians in sound principles of musicianship in worship. .
  • Ability to recruit volunteer musicians and new talent, including consistent follow-up with interested individuals and thoughtful placement within the music program.

  • Flexibility and openness to a variety of musical styles and service types, reflecting the parish’s hybrid musical identity.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with the Rector to support the mission and goals of All Hallows.

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Rector, the Director of Music & Organist oversees the musical aspects of worship at All Hallows Parish, ensuring that music supports the spiritual life of the congregation, strengthens community, and reflects the parish’s commitment to variety, inclusivity, and excellence. The Director works closely with the Rector to plan and execute music for all services, seasons, and special events. Currently this paid role is half time, but with potential to grow as the congregation and musical program grows.

 

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and lead music for up to 3 regular services per week, feast days, seasonal liturgies, special music events, and parishioner funerals.
  • Select hymns, anthems, and service music appropriate to the lectionary, liturgical season, and participant ability.
  • Build and direct the music program(s), providing musical leadership, rehearsal planning, and training.
  • Recruit, audition, and place volunteer musicians; cultivate a welcoming and supportive environment for participants of all ages.
  • Engage with the broader Annapolis area music community as appropriate to the parish’s mission.
