Pipe Organ Builder / Technician / Tuner

R. A. Daffer Church Organs, Inc. is seeking experienced Pipe Organ Builders / Technicians / Tuners to join our growing team. We provide installation, restoration, maintenance, and tonal services for both pipe and hybrid organs throughout the region.

Responsibilities

• Tune, service, and repair pipe organs
• Perform restoration work including releathering, chest, wind system, and action repairs
• Install and regulate pipework
• Assist with new organ installations and rebuilds
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and digital organ systems
• Travel throughout the Mid-Atlantic region (overnight travel)

 Qualifications (not every area needed in each candidate)

• Demonstrated experience in pipe organ building, restoration, tuning, and maintenance
• Ability to tune flue and reed pipework, including seasonal tuning and final tonal refinement
• Experience with tonal finishing, pipe regulation, nicking, cut-up adjustment, and pipe speech
• Working knowledge of slider chests, pitman chests, electro-pneumatic, mechanical (tracker), and electric actions
• Experience rebuilding and regulating windchests, reservoirs, regulators, tremulants, winding systems, and expression mechanisms
• Skilled in releathering, valve and pouch work, chest restoration, and magnet servicing
• Ability to repair and fabricate organ components using traditional woodworking, leatherworking, and metalworking techniques
• Experience installing, racking, and regulating façade and interior pipework
• Ability to diagnose ciphering, winding, action, and tonal problems and recommend appropriate corrective measures
• Familiarity with organ consoles, combination action systems, relay systems, and low-voltage electrical troubleshooting
• Ability to read organ specifications, layout drawings, wiring diagrams, and shop drawings
• Comfortable working in chambers, lofts, and elevated locations with occasional overnight travel
• Strong attention to craftsmanship, historical sensitivity, and professional interaction with churches and musicians
