Position: Director of Music
Location: Home Moravian Church, 529 S Church St, Winston-Salem, NC 27101
Reports to: Pastor
Coordinates with: Pastoral staff, Organist, Music and Congregational Committees
Status: part-time, potentially full-time with additional duties
FLSA: exempt
Purpose Statement:
The Music Ministry of Home Moravian Church seeks to bring people of all ages into a growing relationship with God by contributing to Christian worship through music that supports the message of the liturgy and encourages the musical participation of the congregation to build on faith through the Moravian practice of singing its theology from the heart.
Job summary
In conjunction with the Pastoral staff and Music Committee, plans and coordinates the entire music program, providing leadership and resources to the organist and other music ministry leaders active in the programs or Home Moravian Church.
Essential functions
Initial priorities include:
- Participate in the planning of worship and other musical activities in the congregation.
- Schedule all choirs, ensembles, soloists and instrumentalists participating in worship.
- Hold weekly rehearsals and direct:
- Adult Choir
- Men’s Chorus
- Coordinate service music with leadership of:
- Gregor Handbell Choir
- Funeral Choir (May require direct involvement if a family requests special music.)
- Children’s Choir
- Youth Singers and Instrumentalists
- Band Ministry Team
- Organist(s)
- Maintain the choral library and supervise the maintenance of all instruments (organ, piano, keyboards, Orff instruments, hand bells, band instruments). The choral library has an online catalog.
- Develop new strategies for increasing congregation and community involvement in our Music Ministry programs.
- In times of absence, arrange for a substitute conductor.
- Ensure all programs operate under safe and healthy conditions
Functions of the position may be expanded as initial priorities are met.
Other responsibilities
Participate in regular staff meetings and work with the appropriate congregational committees for short and long-term planning.
Determine and submit the annual budget requirements for the music program and administer the expenditures of the approved budget.
Participate with the church staff, Pastors, and other leaders in facilitating congregational goals, assuming responsibility for tasks as mutually agreed with the supervising Pastor.
Maintain professional competency by practicing, performing, attending continued education opportunities, teaching workshops or seminars, and reading professional journals. Church provides an annual continuing education stipend.
Other tasks as assigned.
Minimum qualifications
Education: At least a Bachelor’s degree in music, church music, or equivalent experience.
Experience:
- Ability to work well with others and participate collegially with staff members, Pastors, and congregational leaders.
- Demonstrated ability to manage, organize, communicate, and utilize current technology.
- Demonstrated experience and competence directing choirs and instrumentalists.
- Demonstrated skill and competence at the keyboard and a working knowledge of other instruments.
- Demonstrated knowledge of or strong commitment to learning Moravian theology, liturgical practice, musical history and repertoire, and use of music in worship.
Work hours: The position, as currently configured, requires approximately 15-20 hours per week or as determined upon hiring.
